Practical Tips

Managing your chemotherapy experience

Chemotherapy  ("Chemo for short) is another "C" word that no one wants to have to go through.  We hear of how awful the side effects can be, which then creates anxiety for cancer patients.  Chemo has been proven to rid the body of cancer and the reality is that it is hard for the body.  However, instead of focusing on negatives, which does not benefit anyone, here are some practical tips from cancer survivors in my book who've been there and done that:
  • "Even though with chemo your body goes through "hell", YOU don't have to.  It's a choice.  Make the experience easier for yourself by having a positive outlook and have fun.  Some patients I knew went to chemo sessions wearing crazy hats.  Then on another day, they decided to wear silly or mismatching socks.  Think of doing things to distract you from the infusion process.  Listen to soothing music, read a fun book, have a nice conversation with other patients, etc."  (Cindy R.)
  • "Ask or read about the side effects of the chemo drugs you're being given.  Remember that you will NOT get all of the side effects; maybe a couple.  If nausea is persistent, take the anti-nausea medication prescribed to you.  If you can bring a friend or family member, do so.  Bring your computer, a good book, knitting project or whatever interests you to bide your time while going through chemo."  (Susan M.)
  • "Keep in mind that chemotherapy will kill your cancer cells and will help you get better.  Try to relax during treatment.  Bring your favorite reading materials or read the magazines they have there.  You  could also listen to music or work on a project or bring someone you can talk to or just sleep.  Basically, you have the choice on how you spend your time.  If you get panicky or uncomfortable, for whatever reason, let the nurses there know.  They'll take care of you." (Hilda K.)
  • "I believe that the mind is a very powerful tool in coping.  Believe that cancer WILL be beaten, but you have to fight to make it happen.  Yes, it's not easy.  Focus on the light at the end of the tunnel.  Surround yourself with people who will fight the battle with you."  (Tet M.)
  •  "I really think that having your best friend or family there to support you through the chemo treatments helps a lot.  Also, think of your chemo infusion as having a magical potion going through your body and saving your life.  That's the best way I can explain it.  That's what worked for me."  (Yesi L.)
  • "Make sure you get your chemo treatment schedule and follow instructions you're given.  If you have questions or concerns, feel free to let your medical team know.  Also, let them know what you're experiencing, so they either provide you with guidance or adjust your medication.  Six hours may seem a long time, but if you keep yourself busy, i.e. talk with someone, watch a video, read a book, play games, listen to music, etc. the time will pass by faster.  Bring everything you need in a bag.  Also, expect to get cold while going through chemo.  Ask for warm blankets (more than one, if necessary), pillows ... anything to make you comfortable.  Wear a hat, jacket, socks ... anything to keep you warm.  Finally, follow your own progress.  Doing so will make you feel empowered and in control.  Most of all, no matter how uncomfortable you may be, think positively of how the chemo is actively fighting to rid your body of cancer.  Believe in your body's ability to heal and in your medical team's ability to guide you through treatment.  Calm your worries and anxieties through prayer or meditation.  Positivity, faith and belief in yourself and in the process in key!  (Amor T.)
